Top 5 Picks

The boss herself has her own favorites, which she would love to share with all, and these are her own top 5 picks:

Bibimbap (Mixed Vegetables on Rice)

A simple but popular dish, Bibimbap is hot rice served in a bowl and topped with a variety of vegetables (both cooked and raw). Seasonal vegetables such as toraji, bell flower roots, bracken, bean sprouts and spinach are often chose for this dish, as well as chestnuts, ginseng, and a small amount of seafood or meat. An egg may also be served on top.

Samgye-tang (Authentic Ginseng Chicken Soup)

Chicken that’s stuffed with glutinous rice, young ginseng shoots and jujube is boiled in a clear stock and served in individual earthenware pots. This dish is popular as a summer dish because Koreans survive the summer heat by eating plenty of hot, stamina giving food.

Kalbi-gui (Barbeque Short Ribs)

Kalbi is one of Korea’s most famous grilled dishes. Beef short ribs are marinated overnight in a mixture of green onions, garlic, sugar, sesame oil and soy sauce. Rice wine and oriental pear slices are sometimes added for extra flavor. The marinade tenderizes the meat, which is grilled over charcoal or gas right at the table itself.

Seafood Pancake

This is a favorite Korean appetizer. It’s great any time of the day and often eaten with maccoli (homemade rice wine) on rainy days spent with friends in Korean pubs. Made from a mix of green onions, scallions, clams and oysters.

Sautéed Sliced Pork with Kim Chi

A Chinese wok or round-bottomed frying pan is usually used for these stir-fried dishes. A very hot fire is used to quickly cook the ingredients without losing their flavor and nutrients. Sauteeing pre-cooked rice, beef, pork, chicken, octopus, squid, mushrooms and other vegetables is popular with restaurants as such dishes can be cooked rather quickly.
